Children with behavior disorders often display a high level of challenging behaviors which can impact their ability to fully participate in family and community life.
Challenging behaviors can have a negative impact on family relationships and decrease the quality of life for families.
These disorders include but are not limited to:
- Attention Deficit Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- Conduct Disorder
- Mood Disorders
While most children are treated with medication and counseling, behavioral therapy is a critical component to the treatment plan. Applied behavior analysis is an effective, systematic approach for intervening with problem behaviors. Through applied behavior analysis, the function of the child’s behavior is identified by completing a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). Once the function of the behavior is identified, an individualized behavior plan can be developed which addresses the function of behavior and teaches the child an appropriate alternative behavior to replace the problem behavior.
Southwest Autism & Behavioral Solutions offer behavioral consultation for children with behavioral disorders. During this consultation process, an assessment of the child’s challenging behavior will be completed to assess the function of the behavior. This assessment is likely to include observations of the child in the setting in which the behavior occurs, interviews, and data collection. Based on the observation, your consultant will develop an individualized plan that will meet the needs of the child and your family. The consultant will teach you to effectively implement the strategies in your home, community and school setting (if needed). Progress on the child will be monitored and the plan will be modified as needed.
